Pat Robertson: Man of God, Patriot, and Terrorist
"Hatred begets hatred", Jesus once taught.
I guess no one's listening.
Except for Osama Bin Laden. And Pat
Robertson. Apparently, they both understand that the cycle of violence
is something which, if propagated, can keep the masses confused and
divided. It appears we nowknow there's little difference between the 700 Club and the 700 Taliban.
And
yet again, the media is blowing it. Whereas the journalists could be
roasting Robertson for all he's earned, they (like the Christian
Coalition) are keeping rather quiet about Robertson's calling for the
assassination ofVenezuelan President Huge Chavez, except for just
reporting the facts: that he said it, and that he apologized for it.
No
one's taken a leap yet and editorialized on it yet, however. Which is
truly sad, since that's the only thing cable media seems good for these
days.
For example, Hannity and Colmes proudly
interviewed Robertson on August 15. And now, just a week later, some
Fox news anchors are touting how old and ready for retirement Robertson
is, how he's no mouthpiece and doesn't speak for Christian
conservatives as a whole. How much more blatant could get be about
wanting us to forget they just interviewed him? Either they have a very
short attention span, or hope we do, but in any case have truly no
ability for objective journalism.
Then
there's CNN, which seems to be buying the Robertson's second lie -- the
apology bit -- in which he denies having said the word "assassination".
They just keep repeating the stock blurbs about "it was
misinterpreted". Uh huh.
No one seems to care enough to pursue this
to its logical end. When you can impeach a president over what the
meaning of "is" is, how can it possibly be permissible to let a leader
of the corporation for Christian evangelism go free as he spouts words of hatred, murder, and terrorism?
Wasn't
one of the reasons why we invaded Iraq, as George W Bush put it,
that "Saddam tried to kill my daddy". Therefore, wouldn't Venezuela
have reason enough to launch an assault on the 700 Club?
Yes, Bob, you said "assassination", you
ass! Stop breaking that Commandment by lying to us and Jesus. We, as
readers, see through your lies and excuses, because that tiresome
neo-conservative defense of "deny it until they believe you" isn't
going to work for you.
You should be above
that, anyway. You're a man of God, remember? Not one of those "eye for
an eye" men of God, either. You're supposed to preach love, acceptance,
and peace. At this rate, however, I'm sure Osama would make room for
you in his ranks, since you're doing such a great job of preaching the
same words of hatred. And, thanks to our media, Al Jazeera can probably
take a few weeks of vacation, since Fox, CNN, and all the rest have
done their work for them.

Breaking News! Republican beer money spells trouble for Democrats
Whoa. The title sounds political, but this blog is supposed to just be about beer.
It
seems that Anheuser-Busch Co. wrote a $5,000 check intended to reach
the Missouri State Republican Party, but for some reason it was
addressed to the Democratic Party, who gratefully accepted and cashed
the check.
Dems refunded the check, but not before Cons threatened a lawsuit.
Definitely, some oversight occured on this one. My understanding is that only Republicans drink Budweiser.
I'm certain that many upstanding Democrats could tell you that us stuffy, uptight liberals only
drink microbrew. Democrats should never have accepted the check to
begin with. Instead, it should have been sent back where it came from,
rejected solely on the basis of the flavorless bread-water it stands
for.
Maybe I'm too liberal. Or perhaps I'm just spoiled on the
great beers we have here in the Northwest. In any case, it's a sorry
piece of news, and I'm amazed to find it made front-page of CNN.com
when more important stories, like the whole Robert Novak flap, are
nowhere to be seen.

"The Situation Room" - CNN's new three-hour advertisement
You may have seen the ads on TV about this new show... "The Situation Room".. supposedly, CNN shows the news as it happens, from around the world, in a way never before done, and with access to stories no one else gets.
Okay. So it's like reinventing breakfast cereal: it's made with grains, is crunchy, and tastes good in milk. Gosh, that sounds new to me as well.
I managed to choke down half an hour of the pilot episode today, and just couldn't take it any longer. Wolf "blitzkrieg" Blitzer was talking with his ever-tense, supercharged tone of voice, while a hand-held camera tilted and moved around him. In the distance were the two blog chicks, who instead of just reading from four blog sources, only read from two, adding little commentary, just as they always do.
And then, banks and banks of full-width television screens littered the walls of the 'Situation Room', flipping from channel to channel, apparently trying to show us that CNN thinks it's a big deal to show several dozen camera views, news feeds, and pictures of people reviewing their teleprompter script in quick succession, as that's what real news is about these days.
I started keeping count of the news:advertising ratio, and I found it less than 1:1, meaning they actually showed more advertising than content during the hour! No sooner would Wolf say, "Welcome back! Now we turn to..." and clip to a talking head with 30 seconds of chitter, than Wolf would again appear and say, "Coming up... when we return..." and then cut to ads. If I wanted this much advertising, I'd just watch the Home Shopping Network.
But what really go to me was the question they asked at the start of the show.. "is broadcast news getting better or worse?", and invited readers to send in emails. So many did. And Jack Cafferty read several emails at the end of the show. One was from a guy named David in Japan. His comments went something like, "I want to see the news, not listen to you talk bad about other networks in a cyncial or childish tone", or something like that.
Good point! Well said, David. So what did Cafferty say? "Oh, he used to always write to me when I had XYZ (sic) show... he's the only person awake in Japan.. I think he must be very lonely there.. so he keeps writing to us, and I'll keep reading his emails". Wolf agreed that David must be 'lonely, indeed'.
Way to go, CNN! Invite your readers to participate, and then give them the finger by talking trash about them on your show! Thanks for reinforcing in me the reasons why I've never bothered to write to you, because deep down, you loathe me. You don't want my feedback. You could care less about what I, the viewer, have to say.
Well, read this. This is a place where my voice can be heard, and the disappointing level you keep sinking to can be aired for all to see. I, for one, welcome readers' input, not loathe it, and this is one reason why I and other bloggers will continue to threaten your control over public opinion through our truly democratic process of communication. Keep it up, CNN. Roll out a bunch of other Situation Rooms, so you can fill your ad space to overflowing levels 24/7. Do what you want, since you obviously don't care what any of us think.
In the end, bloggers will still be here, giving you the ultimate finger: the Delete key.

CNN Waited Too Long, Now Paying Price
So what's the connection between Robert Novak and bull shit? Apparently, not much.
Like most tightly-wound conservative columnists, Novak couldn't be kept silenced for long. Turns out CNN is now paying the price, having had to suspend and apologize for his latest behavioral black-eye:
Robert Novak suspended by CNN http://www.televisionpoint.com/news/newsfullstory.php?id=1123405275
I'm seeing a pattern developing. Talk trash about people for doing something you think is wrong, then when you think no one is watching, go ahead and do it yourself. Hmm. No, Novak never told anyone not to swear, but I distinctly recall numerous times when he would enjoy the luxury of inciting liberals on Crossfire stating they should relax, calm down, etc.
Just like Rush used to condemn drug pushers to hell, or the way W thinks ethics only extends to preserving dead embryos, Novak has now joined the finest ranks of the many hypocritical Republicans out there.
Perhaps if CNN had acted sooner, it wouldn't have come to this. But, as Christiane Amanpour rebutted Ted Turner during an interview several months ago, "why shouldn't we do things this way? It's how every other cable news channel is doing it", it just goes to show that when no one's in charge, and all you are is a herd of sheep being led around by a sack of oats -- when no one is willing to make a stand or question why things are or act out of concerns for ethics or even just professional courtesy -- things like this will happen.
